Murata to Establish Electronics Factory in Tamil Nadu

Japanese electronics component leader Murata Manufacturing Company is set to establish a manufacturing unit in Tamil Nadu, marking a significant boost to the state’s electronics sector. The new facility, located at OneHub Chennai Industrial Park, will focus on producing multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCCs), a key component in smartphones, servers, gaming consoles, and even aerospace projects.

State Industries Minister TRB Rajaa welcomed Murata’s entry, highlighting its importance in Tamil Nadu’s goal of scaling electronics exports to USD 100 Billion. The move follows similar investments by global firms like Corning and Jabil, reinforcing the state’s reputation as a hub for advanced electronics manufacturing.

Strategic Investment for Future Growth

Murata’s decision comes after company president Norio Nakajima confirmed that the firm has been evaluating potential investment scenarios in India. Currently, nearly 60% of Murata’s MLCC production takes place in Japan, but this new venture signals the company’s intent to expand operations in India.

“We have been in discussions with Murata for over a year, and after multiple meetings, we are thrilled to see them begin production in Tamil Nadu,” Rajaa stated. The company aims to scale operations fully by FY26, using this facility as a stepping stone to broader manufacturing activities in the country.

Tamil Nadu: India’s Electronics Export Leader

Driven primarily by Apple and its supply chain, Tamil Nadu has emerged as India’s top exporter of electronics. In FY24, the state recorded a remarkable 78% growth in electronics exports, contributing USD 9.56 Billion to India’s total of USD 29.12 Billion. From April to September alone, Tamil Nadu accounted for over USD 6 Billion in electronics exports.

Addressing skepticism about India’s role in global electronics manufacturing, Rajaa remarked, “For those who say India is only an assembly hub—watch how the supply chain shift is unfolding. India is set to become a global leader in advanced electronics manufacturing, with Tamil Nadu driving this transformation.”
