Landmark Inauguration of Maharashtra’s First Semiconductor Plant

Historic Step Towards Self-Reliance in Semiconductor Manufacturing

Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, accompanied by prominent figures including Deputy Chief Ministers Devendra Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar, Industries Minister Uday Samant, and cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar, inaugurated the state’s first Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Test (OSAT) facility in Navi Mumbai. This inaugural event marks a pivotal step towards reducing India’s dependency on imported semiconductor chips. RRP Electronics Ltd, endorsed by Sachin Tendulkar, has made a substantial investment of Rs 12,035 crore to establish this cutting-edge facility.

A Major Economic Boost

The new semiconductor manufacturing unit is poised to significantly benefit the local economy by employing approximately 400 individuals. Chief Minister Shinde highlighted the commitment of RRP Electronics to further enhance their investment with an additional Rs 24,538 crore. This expansion is set to meet the increasing demands for smaller, more efficient, and faster electronic devices. “The state will support these industries and will be available to help them,” assured CM Shinde.

Vision for a Technologically Empowered Future

The event also resonated with forward-looking statements from Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who addressed the recent disruptions in global supply chains, underscoring the strategic necessity for domestic production capabilities. “Maharashtra is the first state in the country to adopt a semiconductor policy and to foster an ecosystem conducive to this industry,” said Fadnavis. He expressed optimism about the future where “everything will be run on chips made in India,” celebrating the significant milestone represented by the day’s events.

RRP Electronics has outlined a comprehensive future investment strategy totaling Rs 36,573 crore, reflecting the company’s robust commitment to leading the semiconductor manufacturing initiative in Maharashtra. The plant, currently in its first phase of development, will soon be followed by a second phase focusing on Fabrication Manufacturing (FAB), further consolidating Maharashtra’s role as a hub for technological innovation in India.
