Indian Railways Inaugurates Rail Coach Factory in Latur For Vande Bharat Sleeper

Joint Venture to Produce 1,920 Advanced Coaches for Vande Bharat Trains

A new chapter in Indian rail manufacturing has commenced with the inauguration of the Marathwada Rail Coach Factory in Latur, a joint venture between a leading Russian rolling stock manufacturer and an Indian railway public sector undertaking (PSU). The facility is poised to produce 1,920 modern sleeper coaches for Vande Bharat trains, which will comprise 120 complete trainsets. The first of these is anticipated to be rolled out within two years. Kinet Railway Solutions, the joint venture entity, has been awarded a 35-year contract to manufacture and maintain the coaches. The project also includes upgrades to existing government facilities to meet global standards in both production and maintenance.

Economic Boost and Employment Opportunities for the Region

According to Kinet Railway Solutions’ Managing Director, Sathyamurthy K, the factory is set to become a significant socio-economic driver in the region, creating a ripple effect that will involve over 10,000 people across the production chain. Alexandra Meluzova, CEO of Kinet, highlighted that the project will offer substantial employment opportunities, further supporting the local economy. In addition to the production work, the 351-acre site is equipped with 11 advanced assembly stations and various specialized workshops, including car body, testing, bogie, and paint shops, as well as a solar power plant and wastewater treatment facility, ensuring sustainability in operations.

Sustainability and Future Expansion Plans

The factory’s design integrates eco-friendly initiatives, such as the installation of a solar power plant and a wastewater treatment system, aimed at reducing the facility’s carbon footprint. Additionally, more than 1,000 trees will be planted on-site by the end of next year as part of ongoing environmental efforts. Future production plans also involve a shift from the initially planned 16-coach trainset to a more expansive 24-coach Sleeper Vande Bharat configuration, pending final agreement between Kinet and Indian Railways.
