Project to Boost Dairy Farming Community and State Economy
Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu announced on Wednesday that Rs 201 crore has been allocated for the construction of a state-of-the-art milk processing plant at Dhagwar in Kangra district. This project, in collaboration with the National Dairy Development Board, is set to commence construction soon.
Enhancing Dairy Production Capacity
The new milk processing plant is designed with an initial capacity of 1.50 lakh litres per day (LLPD), with potential expansion up to 3 LLPD. The fully automated facility will produce a range of dairy products, including curd, lassi, butter, ghee, paneer, flavoured milk, khoya, and mozzarella cheese. Chief Minister Sukhu emphasized the economic benefits for farmers in Kangra, Hamirpur, Chamba, and Una districts, stating, “The project is expected to enhance the economic prosperity of our farmers and contribute significantly to the state’s economy.”
Commitment to Farmer Welfare and Rural Economy
In line with the government’s dedication to farmer welfare, the initiative also includes plans for producing milk powder, ice cream, and various types of cheese at the Dhagwar plant once it becomes operational. The state government has significantly raised milk procurement prices, with cow milk now priced at Rs. 45 per litre and buffalo milk at Rs. 55 per litre. “This move is part of our broader efforts to boost farmers’ income,” said Sukhu, reaffirming the government’s commitment to introducing new welfare schemes. Strengthening the rural economy is vital for making Himachal Pradesh self-sufficient and prosperous, with about 95% of the state’s population residing in rural areas. The Chief Minister added, “Without achieving the goal of making farmers financially stable, the vision of a prosperous and self-reliant Himachal remains unattainable.”
