Gensol and Matrix Gas to Launch India’s First Hydrogen-Powered Steel Facility.

A Major Leap Towards Sustainable Steel Production

Gensol Engineering Ltd and Matrix Gas & Renewables have been selected for a pioneering project to establish India’s first Green Hydrogen-powered steel manufacturing plant.

This landmark initiative, which will utilize 100% Green Hydrogen, aims to create the largest Green Steel facility in the country, marking a significant advancement in sustainable steel production practices. This project is part of three pilot initiatives approved under the National Green Hydrogen Mission, in partnership with MECON, the Ministry of Steel (MoS), and the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE).

Investment and Technology to Drive Emission Reductions

With a total investment of Rs 321 crore, this facility benefits from a 50% capital expenditure incentive from the Government of India, showcasing the nation’s dedication to lowering carbon emissions in the steel sector. The facility will implement direct reduced iron (DRI) technology, substituting conventional fossil fuels with green hydrogen, thereby drastically reducing CO₂ emissions.

Collaborating on the 50-tonne-per-day pilot plant are consortium partners, including the Indian Institute of Technology Bhubaneswar and Sweden’s Metsol AB. Matrix will manage the entire project lifecycle, from land acquisition to installation and commissioning.

Chirag Kotecha, Director at Matrix, emphasized that this initiative represents a transformative step for India’s steel industry and plays a crucial role in achieving the country’s renewable energy objectives.
