GAIL to Setup Ethane Cracker Project of 60,000 Crore in MP

Massive Investment to Supercharge the Petrochemical Industry

New Delhi: In a bold stride to scale up its petrochemical ventures, GAIL (India) Ltd., a state-run organization, has unveiled plans for an ethane cracker project in Madhya Pradesh, backed by a staggering ₹60,000 crore investment. This ambitious project, aiming for an output of 1500 kilotons per annum (kta), is set to catapult GAIL’s standing in the petrochemical sector to new heights.

Government Collaboration and Infrastructure Development

The proposal has been pitched to the Madhya Pradesh state government for essential enablers. “Approximately 800 hectares of land will be allotted by the MP Industrial Development Corporation Ltd., and the state government has already set the wheels in motion,” GAIL noted in an exchange filing. Furthermore, the filing mentioned that GAIL’s board would seek investment approval following the successful arrangement of project enablers.

Ethane crackers hold significant importance in the petrochemical industry, transforming ethane—a natural gas derivative—into ethylene, a vital raw material used in making plastics, adhesives, synthetic rubber, and various other petrochemical products.

Project Timeline and Economic Impact

Alongside the ethane cracker, GAIL plans to establish a 70-hectare township to support the project. The groundbreaking ceremony is slated for February 2025, with commercial production kicking off in the fiscal year 2030-31.

This announcement arrives amid a backdrop of financial challenges for GAIL, marked by a 5.6% dip in revenue to ₹32,317 crore for the March quarter and a significant over 23% plunge in net profit, largely due to lower revenue and underperformance in the gas marketing segment. This new venture is part of GAIL’s strategy to diversify its portfolio and strengthen its global petrochemical market presence.
