Green Energy Ambitions in Jamnagar
Essar Group has announced a substantial investment of Rs 30,000 crore over the next four years to establish a green hydrogen plant in Jamnagar, Gujarat. This investment marks a significant step in the conglomerate’s strategy to embrace clean energy, positioning it as a key component of their future growth. The project will see Essar Future Energy develop 1 gigawatt of hydrogen capacity and an associated green molecules capacity of 1 million tonnes per annum.
Decarbonizing Global Operations
In addition to the green hydrogen plant, Essar Group is undertaking several ambitious projects to decarbonize its operations worldwide. The conglomerate plans to decarbonize its oil refinery in the UK, build a green steel plant in Saudi Arabia, and develop an LNG and electric ecosystem to decarbonize long-haul heavy trucks. Prashant Ruia, director of Essar Capital, highlighted the group’s commitment to sustainability and reducing carbon footprints across its diverse portfolio.
Expanding Renewable and Traditional Energy Platforms
While focusing on renewable energy, Essar Group will also expand its capacity to generate electricity from coal. The company’s plan includes growing to about 10,000 MW over the next 3-5 years, with significant expansions at its Salaya-DevBhoomi Dwarka thermal power plant in Gujarat. Additionally, Essar is bolstering its fleet of LNG-powered and electric trucks to promote green mobility solutions, aiming to significantly reduce CO2 emissions in the transportation sector.
Exploring Critical Minerals and Advanced Energy Solutions
Essar is also considering entry into mining critical minerals essential for electric vehicle batteries, solar panels, and wind-turbine magnets. In West Bengal, the group is exploring shale gas opportunities and increasing coal bed methane production to contribute to India’s gas production. This multifaceted approach underscores Essar’s commitment to advancing sustainable energy solutions and exploring innovative avenues in the energy sector.
