The Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation Ltd (GCMMF), the brand behind Amul, has announced a ₹600 crore investment to build an integrated dairy plant in Kolkata, West Bengal. This state-of-the-art facility will house the world’s largest curd (dahi) production unit, reinforcing Amul’s commitment to meeting the growing demand for dairy products in the region.
Unveiled during the Bengal Global Business Summit (BGBS) 2025, the project will be developed in two phases by the Kaira District Cooperative Milk Producers Union Ltd in Sankrail Food Park, Howrah, strategically positioned to serve both Kolkata and neighboring markets.
Meeting Rising Consumer Demand with Advanced Processing Capacity
According to Jayen Mehta, Managing Director of GCMMF, the facility will have an unprecedented daily curd production capacity of 10 lakh kilograms, with a milk processing capacity of 15 lakh liters per day. The demand for “tok doi” and “mishti doi”, both staple dairy products in Bengal, has surged, prompting Amul’s expansion in the region.
Currently, Amul leads Bengal’s fresh milk market, selling over 10 lakh liters daily. The company also maintains a strong milk procurement network across 14 districts, with over 1.2 lakh women dairy producers contributing to its operations.
Boosting the Dairy Cooperative Movement and Economic Growth
The establishment of this plant aligns with the White Revolution 2.0 initiative by the Ministry of Cooperation, further strengthening India’s dairy cooperative movement. Amul, recognized as the world’s largest farmer-owned dairy cooperative, currently procures 300 lakh liters of milk daily from 36 lakh farmers across 18,600 villages in Gujarat.
With GCMMF’s turnover reaching ₹59,445 crore in FY2023-24, the company anticipates continued double-digit growth, driven by increasing consumer demand. Additionally, Amul’s presence in the global dairy market continues to expand, with exports to 50 countries and growing operations in the United States, catering to the Indian diaspora and Asian communities.
During BGBS 2025, West Bengal attracted investment proposals worth ₹4.40 lakh crore, signaling a major boost for the state’s industrial and economic landscape.
