Sapigen Launches ₹1500 Cr Vaccine Facility in Bhubaneswar

Sapigen Biologix Private Limited has inaugurated a cutting-edge vaccine manufacturing facility at the Biotech Park in Andharua, Bhubaneswar. Spread across 10 acres, the plant is one of the largest vaccine production sites in the world. Located in Odisha, the new unit is poised to play a crucial role in global vaccine supply, with an impressive annual production capacity of eight billion doses.

The Hyderabad-based company, a subsidiary of Biovet Pvt Ltd, founded by Dr. Krishna Ella of Bharat Biotech, marks a significant milestone by becoming the first vaccine producer to commence commercial operations in Odisha.

Focus on Cholera and Other Critical Vaccines

The newly established Rs 1,500 crore facility will produce more than 10 vaccines targeting key diseases, including polio, cholera, and malaria. The first vaccine to be rolled out is the Hillchol (BBV131), an innovative oral cholera vaccine. This development comes at a critical time, as there is a global shortage of cholera vaccines.

The facility is not only set to address present-day health challenges but also positions Sapigen Biologix at the forefront of the global vaccine manufacturing industry. By continuously enhancing its capabilities, the company aims to be a key player in global health solutions for years to come.

Economic and Employment Impact in Odisha

The new facility will generate significant employment opportunities, with an estimated 2,000 direct and over 1,500 indirect jobs for the region. Dr. Raches Ella emphasized the plant’s role in strengthening the local economy and fostering a talent pipeline in Odisha’s growing biotech sector.

The facility’s launch also plays a crucial role in the expansion of India’s biotechnology ecosystem, with Odisha emerging as a key player in this sector. As part of its broader vision, Sapigen Biologix aims to collaborate with academic institutions, research organizations, and industry leaders to further strengthen the state’s position in the global biotech arena.

The plant recently welcomed a high-level delegation led by Singapore’s President, Tharman Shanmugaratnam, who commended the facility’s advanced technology and its potential to make a significant impact on global public health.
