Reliance Set to Commence Battery Gigafactory Operations at Jamnagar Plant by 2026, With Annual Capacity of 30 GWH

Reliance to Launch Battery Gigafactory at Jamnagar by 2026

Battery Manufacturing Hub to Boost Green Energy in India

Reliance Industries Ltd. (RIL) is set to commence operations at its state-of-the-art battery Gigafactory in Jamnagar, Gujarat, by late 2026. Under the leadership of Chairman Mukesh Ambani, this project marks a major step in India’s shift towards sustainable energy solutions. The Gigafactory will have an impressive annual capacity of 30 GWh, making it one of the largest battery production facilities in the country. Initially, the focus will be on manufacturing Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) for a wide range of applications, including utility-scale, residential, commercial, and mobility sectors. Future expansion plans include cell manufacturing and battery chemical production, positioning Reliance as a leader in the advanced energy sector.

Strategic Investments and Expansion Plans

Leveraging the government’s production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme, Reliance has secured a 5 GWh capacity for advanced chemistry cell battery production and is bidding for an additional 10 GWh. This strategic move will allow the company to rapidly scale up its manufacturing capabilities to meet growing domestic and international demand. Additionally, Reliance is at the forefront of developing sodium-ion battery technology, with plans to start industrial-scale production of sodium-ion cells by next year, demonstrating a commitment to pioneering sustainable energy technologies.

Innovative Collaborations and Advanced Technology

The Gigafactory will benefit from the expertise of Reliance’s subsidiaries, Lithium Werks and Faradion, in producing cutting-edge batteries that prioritize safety, stability, and cost-effectiveness. By integrating advanced electrochemical technologies, Reliance aims to address a broad spectrum of energy storage needs, from stationary solutions to electric mobility, reinforcing its position as a key player in the global energy storage market.
