Toshiba to Invest Rs 500 Crore to Expand Transformer Manufacturing Capacity

Toshiba Production Capacity Expansion to Meet Global Demand

Toshiba Transmission & Distribution Systems India (TTDI) announced on Thursday a significant investment of Rs 500 crore aimed at boosting the manufacturing capacity of power and distribution transformers by approximately 1.5 times. This strategic move is designed to address the increasing global demand for power transmission and distribution equipment. The investment will be rolled out over a period of three years, from FY2024 to FY2026, according to the company’s official statement.

Boosting Make-in-India and Export-from-India Initiatives

Strengthening our commitment to the Make-in-India and Export-from-India initiatives, this investment will enhance operational efficiency, accelerate speed-to-market, and support our expansion efforts both domestically and internationally,” stated Hiroshi Furuta, Chairperson and Managing Director of TTDI. Toshiba has positioned itself as a key supplier of Transmission & Distribution (T&D) equipment for both conventional and renewable energy sources. With India established as a central hub for manufacturing and exports, TTDI has successfully supplied transformers to over 50 countries.

State-of-the-Art Facility and Enhanced Capabilities

The investment will significantly upgrade TTDI’s assembly and testing capacities for distribution and power transformers. Specifically, it will enhance the testing capacity for power transformers, aimed at expanding exports and meeting the high demand for 400kV/765kV transformers in the Indian market. Additionally, TTDI plans to create a state-of-the-art facility for CRGO (Cold Rolled Grain Oriented) steel processing, aimed at reducing lead times, and improving quality and safety standards. The company will also establish a new manufacturing unit for surge arresters, expected to be operational by the second half of FY2024.

TTDI continues to offer advanced technologies for the renewable energy sector, including photovoltaic (PV) inverters, power transformers, gas-insulated switchgear (GIS), and inverter duty transformers, reinforcing its commitment to sustainable energy solutions.
