Carl Zeiss New Facility to Enhance Manufacturing Capacity

German optics and medical technology leader Carl Zeiss Group has announced a substantial investment of INR 2,500 Crore in a new manufacturing plant in Bengaluru, Karnataka. This strategic expansion aims to significantly boost the company’s production capacity for spectacle glasses, aligning with their goal of achieving an estimated turnover of INR 5,000 Crore by 2027.

Strategic Land Acquisition and Construction Plans

Carl Zeiss has acquired 34 acres of prime land near Bengaluru airport, with plans to secure an additional 9 acres for future expansion. Construction is set to commence by mid-month, with parallel manufacturing operations expected to start by October 2024. This investment is poised to generate approximately 800 jobs initially, potentially expanding to a workforce of 5,000 at full operational capacity.

Boost in Production and Diversification

The new facility will dramatically increase the production of spectacle blanks from 30,000 to 200,000 units per day and prescription lenses from 10,000 to 60,000 units per day. In addition to optical lenses, the plant will support other Carl Zeiss businesses, including medical technology and research microscopy. Decisions regarding the manufacturing of these additional products will be made at a later stage.
